A SANCTUARY WHERE ANIMALS HEAL, AND COMMUNITIES GROW TOGETHER

WHAT WE DO

~What We Do~
At Project Hiraeon, we focus on humane, sustainable animal welfare, starting with Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) of feral and community cats. Our goal is to break the cycle of overpopulation, reduce suffering, and build a healthier balance between people and animals through hands-on TNR work, education, and community engagement. When there are cats who have a calmer disposition we rehabilitate them for indoor life. The more cats we get of the streets, the healthier it'll be for them and our ecosystem.

~Where We’re Starting~
Our current focus is Otsego County where feral cat populations have spiraled out of control, rooted in a mix of abandoned barn cats and displaced pets from local disasters like fires, and storms. These cats have reproduced unchecked, creating a growing crisis. We're stepping in to stabilize and protect both the animals and the community.

~How You Can Help~
Your support directly fuels this mission. Every membership and donation helps fund the essential tools we need: traps, spay/neuter surgeries, vaccines, recovery care, and supplies. These contributions allow us to expand our reach, respond to emergencies, and continue providing humane solutions where they’re needed most.

Together, we’re not just helping cats, we’re building a safer, more compassionate world.

The Problem

~How Cats Decimate Ecosystems~
Up to 164 million cats reside in the United States, of which an estimated 30 to 80 million are unowned. A large portion of owned cats are also free-ranging. The threat which free-ranging cats pose to native wildlife cannot be understated. Proponents of free-ranging cats on the landscape argue that predation by such cats on wildlife is negligible when compared to other sources of mortality, however many studies have shown that cats are a major, if not the greatest, source of mortality to native birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. While loss of habitat is the primary cause of species extinctions, cats have contributed to the extinction of at least 63 species in the wild around the world. Source

~How Cats get Decimated by a Habitat that isn't Designed for Them~
Although cats are technically apex predators, whether they thrive or not is a controversial topic. It's a common misconception that just because a cat has survived outside for a few years, or cries at the door to go outside, it must mean they are built for it. In reality, our society is a habitat designed by humans to serve humans. Outdoor cats face many dangers, including traffic, predators, poisonous plants and chemicals, parasites, disease, and extreme weather. Even experienced outdoor cats can be injured or become lost. Keeping cats indoors, or providing safe outdoor access with a secure enclosure or supervised leash walks helps protect them while also reducing their impact on local wildlife, especially birds and small mammals.

The Solution?

From the perspective of an animal sanctuary, solving cat overpopulation requires a holistic, long-term approach rather than simply responding to immediate crises. By using lateral thinking, sanctuaries can combine trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs, affordable spay and neuter services, community education, responsible adoption initiatives, and partnerships with local organizations to address the root causes of overpopulation. This compassionate, systems-based strategy improves the welfare of both cats and the communities in which they live, creating sustainable change instead of temporary solutions. But where will they go?

This is why we've designed an indoor outdoor cat facility for local community cats! This would be a permanent place for unhoused cats to go where they can slowly adjust to indoor life while they wait for their chance to find a home. We've had our first fundraiser raising about 5% of the necessary funding needed to build the cat facility. We'll continue having fundraisers until we get to at least a 3rd of the required amount needed to start construction

IMPACT

40+ HOMES FOUND:  Since starting our project in the boroughs of NYC, we have successful found homes for over 30 kittens and cats. Including special needs cats, and bonded pairs!

6 MONTHLY SPAY/NEUTER CLINICS: Getting the property to build our sanctuary gave us the space to host monthly spay/neuter clinics with other organizations. So far we have been able to get over 50 cats spayed and neutered on-site!

Thanks to our monthly donors we're able to keep the light on and keep doing what we love!💙

BECOME A PART OF OUR PROJECT

Project Hiraeon is more than just an animal sanctuary, it’s a community-driven effort to create a safe and healing space for both animals and people. Our mission is to provide a loving home for animals in need while also building a supportive and welcoming environment for those looking to make a meaningful impact.

This sanctuary isn’t just about rescuing animals—it’s about coming together to build something bigger than ourselves. Whether you’re looking for hands-on involvement or a way to support from afar, there are many ways to be a part of our journey.

For long-term supporters who want to directly contribute, we offer a limited number of farm hand and animal care positions with room and board. These roles are perfect for those who want to help shape the sanctuary, provide daily care for the animals, and be part of an organized, mission-driven lifestyle. It’s an opportunity for anyone looking for a fresh start, a purpose, or simply a way to make a difference.

But even if you can’t be there in person, you can still play a vital role in making this dream a reality. By becoming a member, you’ll be directly supporting the sanctuary’s growth and animal care while gaining access to exclusive perks like behind-the-scenes updates, community voting on sanctuary decisions, and discounts on merch and Twitch subscriptions.

Every contribution—whether through hands-on work, financial support, or simply spreading the word—helps bring us closer to building a true sanctuary for animals and people alike. If you believe in what we’re creating, we invite you to join us. Together, we can make this vision come to life.
